Nurburgring 24 Hours 2013 - Night - carwitter

With most of the racing seasons now in full swing May offers plenty for fans to get excited about both trackside and on the sofa.

Nurburgring 24 Hours 2013 - Audi R8 LMS - carwitter

We start in Germany, Nurburgring to be precise as the N24 (Nurburgring 24 Hour) takes place on the weekend of the 15th/16th of the month.

Plenty of top GT squads will be in attendance at what is arguably the biggest GT race of the year, expect almost-factory entries from Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Nissan and Porsche among others.

The N24 will probably be more widely viewed this year for all the wrong reasons following the death of a spectator and injuries to several others a little over a month ago, resulting in the short term ban on GT3 machinery (which makes up the bulk of the expected lead pack) while the incident was investigated.

The ban has been lifted, GT3 cars will compete but certain parts of the track will be confined to speed restrictions. Aside from the 31 cars in the top classes 120+ more cars from the established GT/endurance squads, tuning / preparation stables and out and out enthusiasts will join the grid. Find out who is driving what here.

The N24 is broadcast live via the Nurburgring’s own website, expect Radio Le Mans to also have the feed, Nismo are likely also to broadcast via their YouTube channel.

We stay in Germany, Hockenheim this time for the start of the DTM series which has a rather different support series this time.

The FIA World Rally Cross shares the stage with the German Touring Car programme in an event that promises to be well, different.

Former DTM champion and all rounder Mattias Ekstrom should be kept busy, he’ll likely be competing in both! The “double header” takes place on the weekend of the 2nd of May before the series head off on their own the DTM to Lausitzring 29th-31st, while the WRX moves to Belgium on the week end of the 16th before crossing the channel to the UK and Lydden Hill, Kent on the late bank holiday weekend. The two championships can be seen on BT Sport (DTM) and British Eurosport with a highlights programme on Quest (WRX).

Moving a little further north we find ourselves in Belgium for the 2nd round of the WEC at Spa, it is worth noting that the 6 hour takes place on the 2nd of May, the Saturday not the Sunday, and is the final round prior to Le Mans.

Following the excitement that was delivered at Silverstone Spa should be fantastic. A third Audi running in Le Mans trim will be an addition to the LMP1H battle at the front along with the debut of Nico Hulkenberg in the third Porsche. For those of you who can’t get there Motors TV have it live.

Not enough prototype / GT racing for you there? Well Sunday the 3rd sees the USCC move to Laguna Seca for round 4, once again, Motors TV have it live.

For those of us who like our races a little shorter the FIA WTCC will be entertaining in Hungary (2nd/3rd) and Germany at the Nurburgring supporting the 24hr event on the 16th. Eurosport again will have the coverage.

Formula E is back again, this time heading to the familiar streets of Monte Carlo (9th) and onwards to Berlin Germany a few weeks later. Once again ITV4 has the action.

British fans will have plenty of trackside action to keep themselves occupied as the BTCC makes its annual trip to Thruxton on the 9th / 10th (ITV4).

While the Blancpain Sprint Series lands in the UK at Brands Hatch the same weekend with the endurance series making an appearance at Silverstone a fortnight later. (BT Sport/Motors TV).

Two Wheeled fans don’t miss out either as the British Superbikes heads to Oulton Park on the early of the two Holidays, before the World Superbikes arrive at Donington Park on the 24th (via Imola, Italy on the weekend of the 9th/10th) Eurosport / ITV4 once again is the place for Superbikes.

While BT Sport will be kept busy with Moto GP action this month with races in Jerez (2nd/3rd) Le Mans (16th/17th) and Mugello (30th/31st).

As always there is plenty else around including V8 supercars (2nd/3rd & 16th/17th), WRC (21st-24th) Motors TV and NASCAR (3rd/9th/15th/16th/24th and 31st) on Premier Sports. Phew.
