In a family car space is essential. Looks are a bonus and a great specification is nice if you can afford it. Something that should never be compromised on though is safety, and many families will discount a car if it doesn’t stack up.
Of course, you never know just how safe a car is until you have an accident which is why Euro NCAP exist. They run the European car safety performance assessment programme, which is a voluntary assessment of safety on every new car.
The safest cars receive a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating and in recent years this has become more difficult to achieve because more rigorous standards have been introduced, particularly around assistance systems. Manufacturers can be caught out with a lower rating if they don’t meet Euro NCAP’s high standards.
Suzuki Vitara awarded maximum safety rating
One car that hasn’t been caught out is the new Suzuki Vitara, which has been awarded the maximum 5-Star Euro NCAP safety rating. This makes it one of the safest cars on the road and it is, in fact, the first ever compact SUV to receive the maximum 5-star rating since more rigorous testing standards were introduced in 2015.
The results of the crash test are as follows:
- Adult Occupant 89% (minimum for the maximum rating is 80%)
- Child Occupant 85% (minimum for the maximum rating is 75%)
- Pedestrian 75% (minimum for the maximum rating is 65%)
- Safety assist 75% (minimum for the maximum rating is 70%)
The Suzuki Vitara performed brilliantly in crash tests with high ratings for adult and child occupant protection. It scored 5% or more than it had to on each test to achieve its 5-star rating, including 10% more on pedestrian safety.
In terms of safety kit, all models come as standard with front driver and passenger airbags, side head driver and passenger airbags, side chest driver and passenger airbags and a knee airbag on the driver’s side. There are ISOFIX mounting points on both rear outermost seats and seat belt pretensioners and load limiters.
Top-spec SZ5 models come equipped with a suite of additional safety features. These include dual sensor brake support, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control (as standard, the Vitara comes with regular cruise control). These systems help improve safety out on the road to ensure everyday journeys are hassle-free.
The Vitara is also equipped with a range of convenience features that make life easier, with SZ-T models boasting a rear parking camera, navigation and smartphone linkage. SZ5 models add front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry with push-button start and power-folding door mirrors which are also heated.
If safety is of paramount importance to you, you can even spec your Suzuki Vitara with ALLGRIP 4-wheel drive on SZ-T and SZ5 models. This 4WD system has driver-selectable Snow and Sports modes and a Lock mode to engage the 4WD system permanently.
ALLGRIP offers up better traction when needed and improves stability during hard acceleration by eliminating wheelspin. Paired with the 1.0 Boosterjet engine, it delivers truly excellent performance in all conditions.
With so many advanced safety features, the Vitara ticks all the right boxes as an everyday family car. The fact it looks great is the icing on the cake.
