When buying a new car, we hope that it’ll last us for years to come. After all, we don’t want to spend a ton of money on something that will need replacing after 12 months. But, you might be surprised how many times this can happen to car owners.

Then they ‘re left scrimping for cash to buy another new vehicle. So this doesn’t happen to you, there are a few things you need to look out for when you are at the dealership.

It has low mileage

If you want to keep your car for the long-term, you need to ensure you’re not buying something with a lot of miles on the clock. If it already has 50 or 60k on the clock, you’re going to struggle to keep it for the next five to 10 years.

In fact, the more miles on the car, the shorter the life expectancy of the vehicle. Of course, this is not always the case. You might be surprised to hear there are some cars on the market which can last up to 250,000 miles. Some of the smaller models like a Toyota Yaris is actually a high-mileage runner, while family cars like the Lexus RX can also pile on the miles too. Just make sure you look for vehicles that have low mileage and can last the distance too.

You also have to keep an eye for vehicle clocking. Unfortunately, it’s still a common practice for dealers and private sellers to adjust the mileage!

It’s a reliable make

When you go to the garage, it’s likely you’ll find a whole range of cars available for you to choose. While you’ll know most of the well-known makes like BMW, Ford, and Nissan, there might be a few you are less familiar with.

But it’s always a good idea to go for a reliable make if you want longevity. If you can’t find the right car at the garage, you might want to use a service like Cars & Co. With this system, you can request a particular make, and they will source the vehicle based on your requirements. That way, you can ensure you end up with a car which lasts the distance.

It’s had minimum work

A lot of people buy a car second-hand. If you want a car which will last you for the long-term, you need to ensure that it hasn’t had a mixed history. If there’s already been a list of problems, it’s likely to continue to have issues in the future, and you might end up needing to replace it sooner than later.

You should ask to see the service book before purchase, if they refuse, it’s time to walk away.  Also, you can look online for a history of a car.

Your own driving habits can also affect the longevity of the vehicle!
