Ask someone what car they drive and you will get a make, a model and probably a year. Ask what bumper it has and you will usually get a blank look. For anyone buying exterior styling parts in the UK, that second question is the one that decides whether the part fits, and it is the single most common reason a box goes straight back to the sender.
The problem is not that buyers are careless. It is that British trim ladders have quietly become one of the most confusing things about owning a modern car.

One model, several different front ends
A 3 Series in SE trim and a 3 Series in M Sport are the same car in almost every way that a road test cares about, and two different cars in every way that an aftermarket splitter cares about. The M Sport front bumper is a separate moulding with a different lower edge, different intake shapes and a different valance profile. A part designed against one will not sit flat on the other.
The same split runs right across the market. Volkswagen has R-Line, Ford has ST-Line, Audi has S line, Vauxhall has GS, Peugeot has GT. In each case the sporting trim brings a distinct front and often rear bumper rather than a badge and a set of wheels. Manufacturers do this because it sells cars. It also means a single model year can have two or three genuinely different bodies in circulation.
Then there are the details that vary within a trim. Parking sensor counts differ by options pack. Some cars have fog light housings, some have blanking plates in the same aperture. Cars fitted with adaptive cruise have a radar module behind a specific section of the lower grille, which changes what can be mounted in front of it.
The facelift line is sharper than it looks
Mid-life facelifts almost always change bumpers, because that is the cheapest way to make a car look new. The awkward part is timing. Facelift models arrive part way through a calendar year, so a car registered in one year can be either side of the line depending on build date, and pre-registered stock muddies it further.
This catches people out constantly. A buyer searches for parts by registration year, finds something that says it fits, and receives a component shaped for the other version of the same car. Nothing was mislabelled. The year simply is not a reliable way to identify a bumper.

How to work out what is actually on the car
The V5C will not help. It lists make, model, colour and engine capacity, and says nothing about trim or bumper.
Three approaches that do work, in order of reliability:
- Build data from the VIN. A franchised dealer parts department can pull the original build specification for a chassis number, including the exact bumper part number. This takes one phone call and is free.
- Original sales documentation. The invoice or order form from first registration lists the trim and option packs by name.
- Physical identification. Compare the lower front bumper against manufacturer images for both trims and both facelift stages. Look at the shape of the outer intakes, the fog light aperture, and whether the lower lip is a separate piece or moulded in.
Photographing the front and rear of the car straight on, from about waist height, is worth doing before ordering anything. It gives a reference that can be checked against a product listing, and it is what any decent supplier will ask for if there is a query.
What a product listing should be telling you
A listing that says a part fits a model and a range of years is not giving enough information to buy on. A listing that specifies generation, facelift stage, trim level and any option-related exclusions is. It is also worth reading what a listing says a part does not fit. Negative fitment information is more useful than positive fitment information, because it is the exclusions that catch people. A part that fits everything except cars with front parking sensors is a part that will not fit a large share of the used market.

Why this matters more than it used to
Two reasons. The first is that modern bolt-on parts are made to much finer tolerances than the fibreglass kits of twenty years ago, so there is no slack to absorb a mismatch. Precision is the point, and precision is unforgiving.
The second is money. A wrongly specified part is not just an inconvenient return. If it has been painted to match the car before anyone noticed the problem, it is no longer returnable at all, and the paint cost is usually a good deal more than the part cost. Painting before test fitting is a habit worth breaking.
