Putting the Fun Back Into Driving

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Driving is a lot like cooking; some people love it, some people hate it, and many people begrudgingly accept it. Whatever you feel about driving, however, there’s a high chance that you simply have to do it. After all, unless you’re lucky enough to have your own chauffeur, you’re probably going to spend a decent percentage of your day behind the wheel, especially if you have to drive to and from work.

So if you’re going to do something, then it’ll be ideal if you can enjoy it, too. Alas, even people who grew up loving vehicles can fall out of love with driving. The secret weapon against this lethargic approach to driving is to ensure that you’re making it as fun as possible. And happily, there are a bunch of things you can do that’ll make getting behind the wheel more delightful.

Let’s take a look at some of the most effective methods.

Get a New Car

We recognise that this option won’t be available to everyone, but if you’re in a position to, then why not consider getting a new vehicle? Well, it doesn’t have to be new, just new to you — a used car will work just fine!

Getting behind the wheel of a new car can make those usually humdrum journeys much more exciting. Of course, it’s probably not worth buying a new car just because you’re mildly bored of your vehicle, but if you feel that it’s about time you had a new ride, then it could be a good option!

Upgrade Your Current Vehicle

Not in a position to get a new vehicle? Then you could always consider making upgrades to your existing vehicle. There are plenty of aftermarket improvements you can make to your car that’ll have it looking, feeling, and running much better — and that’ll naturally have an impact on your enjoyment of your journeys.

So, what kind of upgrades should you be making to your vehicle? It depends on the vehicle, but we’ve always found that improving the sound system and improving the comfort levels of the seats can go a long way towards making us more inclined to get behind the wheel.

Give It The Personal Touch

It’s much more fun to drive when you feel that you have a “connection” with the vehicle. If you don’t yet feel that you’ve bonded with your car — as in, it doesn’t yet feel truly like your own — then consider adding some personal touches that make it well and truly yours. Customising the interior to match your personal style or adding an air freshener that has your favourite scent are good starting points. You can also take a look at private plates, and choose one that you connect with — your car will feel very much your own if you have a plate that includes your favourite number or year of birth! Also, remember that since this is your car, you get to set the temperature, seat position, and other small touches. Set them all to your specific preference, and driving will be much more enjoyable.

Take a Road Trip

You can’t be all that surprised if you’re not loving driving if all you’ve been doing is driving to work, the supermarket, and other routine destinations. One effective way to rediscover your love of driving is to take a fun journey that reminds you of all the benefits of having the freedom of the road. The UK is jam-packed with great destinations, so look at loading up the vehicle with supplies and hitting the road — we’re sure that by the time you return home, you’ll be fully reminded of how awesome it is to have a car in your life.

Don’t have time for a road trip? Make your trips to work more fun by listening to podcasts, audiobooks, and music playlists. Used correctly, the commute can inspire genuine joy.

Learn to Accept Bad Drivers

You might love driving, but alas, you’re not the only car on the road. Traffic is bad enough, but when you see someone driving terribly or rudely? That’s enough to have you longing for those pre-car days.

You can’t avoid bad drivers, but you can learn to ignore them. Think about it: when you let yourself get annoyed by the actions of another driver, who are you really hurting? It’s not bothering that other driver, that’s for sure! The best approach is to simply breathe and let it go — it’s not worth ruining your experience of being on the road!
