If you have just purchased a new car then you will be very excited to hit the road, but it is important that you know how to properly maintain the vehicle so that it continues to run smoothly and efficiently.
Many motorists do not know how to look after their vehicle, so read on to discover the main car maintenance tasks to keep your car happy and operating as it should for many years to come.

Wash the Car
Washing the car is an important maintenance task and does much more than simply make the car look nice and shiny. Washing every section of the car, including the undercarriage and fender wells, will remove dirt, road salt and other damaging materials that can hurt the vehicle body.

Checking Engine Oil
Check the engine oil every month or more regularly if you notice a leak. Always do this on level ground for an accurate reading and fix any leaks as soon as possible.

Keep Tire Pressure Accurate
Be sure to check the tyre pressure once a month as if they are not inflated to the right level it could damage the car and will also make the vehicle less economical. Always make sure that they are inflated to the recommended pressure as recommended by the manufacturer.
A good way to do this is to purchase your own tyre press kit, like the Ring RAC 635 we reviewed.

Change Engine Oil
The engine oil should be changed every 7,500 miles or six months (whichever comes first). Many motorists avoid doing this as they find the process daunting, but it can actually be relatively straightforward provided that you find a helpful guide online and have the right tools, including an adjustable spanner from a specialist like RS.

Replace the Air Filter
The air filter should also be changed every 7,500 miles or six months. You can tell when it needs replacing as you will not be able to see any light through it when held up to a light source.
Check Fluids
Regularly check your fluid levels and look for any signs of leaks or top up if needed. This will include the brake-fluid level, engine coolant, power steering fluid and the windshield washer fluid.

Exhaust Inspection
From time to time you should get underneath the vehicle to check the exhaust system (or take it into the garage to do this). Carefully look for any signs of rust and tighten any loose clamps.

Look at the Brakes
You may feel better taking the vehicle into the garage to check your brakes, but it is also possible to replace the brake pads yourself if you are looking to save money.
As such a vital part of the vehicle, the brakes should be looked at at least twice a year and more if you spend a lot of time on the roads.

These are a few of the key maintenance tasks that will keep your vehicle healthy and running smoothly, but always remember to carefully follow the maintenance schedule as recommended by the manufacturer and get any repairs carried out as soon as possible. This should allow for many happy years of motoring in your new car.
