You just select the chemistry (Lead Acid or Lithium), and the vehicle type plugged in (Bike or Car) and the unit does the rest, delivering a perfectly calibrated charge curve. This eliminates the risk of frying any sensitive electronics or incorrectly charging specialty batteries like AGM types – which it has a dedicated mode for too.

How?
The NXT 5 is a compact unit that weighs in at a featherlight 0.6 kg, making it easy to store and handle – it’s literally palm-sized and its dimensions are significantly smaller than its battery powered, multi-function cousin, the CTEK CS Free.
As mentioned at the start, this charger works with all 12V batteries from 1.2 to 160 Ah, supporting every type of lead acid battery (WET, MF, Ca/Ca, AGM, EFB, GEL) plus the increasingly common LiFePO₄. The 5.0 A output is adjustable across 14.4V, 14.7V, and 15.8V for specific modes.
The unit is rated IP65, meaning it is completely protected from dust ingress and can handle jets of water from any direction—far more protection than most run-of-the-mill battery chargers.
All of the rubber cables are nice and thick, built to withstand daily use, oil, and chemicals. Crucially, the Connect U-terminal (for permanent battery connection) is included, which is a fantastic addition for hassle-free long-term maintenance. It also means you can leave one set of cables hooked up, but still use the charger on another vehicle or battery with the crocodile clips. On the top, a clear, simple interface allows mode selection and displays charging progress at a glance.
What’s the CTEK NXT 5 like?
As expected from CTEK’s award-winning Swedish engineering, using the NXT 5 is pure simplicity. I hooked it up to a rather sad (but new) Bosch battery on my poor old Peugeot 207 that needed moving from in front of my garage. Even though the battery is a few months old and I had a solar charger attached, it was still stone dead after sitting idle.
The ease of operation with the CTEK NXT 5 was immediately apparent. There’s no complex menu diving, apps, or bluetooth conneections, you just select the battery type/mode you need, connect the clamps, and let it run.
One of the major benefits was the automatic temperature compensation. I tested it just as the weather temps plunged to around 5˚C, and checking it a few times with a multimeter, I could see the NXT 5 intelligently adjusted the voltage to ensure the battery received a proper charge—something standard chargers often fail to do, leading to undercharging in winter.
The charger feels solid and well-built, and the heavy-duty rubber cables are a definite upgrade on some of their competitor offerings.
But it’s not just about charging; it’s about revival. Watching the smart system work through its stages to desulphate and then recondition the deeply discharged battery gave me confidence that the NXT 5 was actively extending the battery’s life, not just giving it a quick blast top-up. The 5-year warranty also offers great peace of mind. I doubt you’ll need it though as I’ve been lucky to test many CTEK products over the years and all of them are still going strong.

It would be nice if the charger came with a protective storage bag or rubber bumper style case, but given the inclusion of the handy Connect U-terminal and the unit’s own impressive IP65 rating, that’s a very minor complaint.
