What To Do If You Break Down

| |

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Everyone is likely to break down in their car every now and then, and it will probably happen to everyone at least once or twice in their lives. It is therefore something that you are going to need to be prepared for, to ensure that you are aware of what you need to do when it happens to you. It might not always be obvious what steps to take in the moment, so if you are prepared beforehand, you will be able to keep your head much more when it happens.

Let’s take a look at some of the things to consider if you break down in your car.

Attempt To Pull Over

It might be possible to pull over, in which case you should do that, as it is the safest for everyone. As you do this, make sure that you are wary of other road users, and that you are doing all you can to be careful as you pull over. It might not be possible to do so, or not safe to, in which case you will simply need to follow the remaining steps below. Try to remain calm if this is the case.

Stay Safe

The first thing to remember is always to stay safe. If you have broken down on a motorway, then you might find that staying in the vehicle is the safest thing to do, depending on where on the road you are. However, if at all possible, you should try to leave the vehicle through the left-hand door, as this will be on to the less busy lane, and you are therefore less likely to be hit by a car.

Call For Help

Now that you are safely by the side of the road, it’s time to call for help. You can do this in a number of ways, depending on the situation. If you have a mobile phone and you have signal and battery, you might decide to call Care Auto, or a breakdown service that you are allied with. If not, you might need to find a phone on the side of the road. On motorways, these are normally spaced apart pretty frequently, and they can be used to seek help to at least tow off the road.

Remain Calm

Throughout all of this, you might find that you start panicking, which is of course perfectly natural. So it’s a good idea to ensure that you are staying calm as much as possible. As long as you do that, you are going to find that the whole situation goes a lot more smoothly, and that you ultimately get through it much better. Of course, that is much easier said than done, but it’s something to bear in mind nonetheless.

There you have it. If you follow these steps, you should remain safe when you break down, even on a busy motorway. Hopefully it will never happen to you, but if it does you now know what to do about it.
