As we all know, the BMW i3 can be prone to punctures. So you’d think skinnier tyres would mean less surface area for nails and screws to find their way into, but no.
A simple piece of metal can leave you stranded by the roadside waiting for recovery. Yes, you could use the puncture repair kit that BMW provide, but their tyre repair kit sets hard and renders the tyre useless.
Yup, that puncture that probably could have been repaired for around £20 can’t be, so you need a new tyre at £100+. Great.
Holts Tyreweld
But, there’s another solution. Holts Tyreweld.
It uses the same foamy type gunk mixed with air to re-inflate your wheel and seal the puncture. But instead of setting hard, it can be washed out so the puncture can be repaired when you get it to a garage.
There’s another ‘but’ though…
Holts Tyreweld comes in different sized cans, 300ml, 400ml and 500ml. These are for tyres sizes, R14, R16 and R17+
What Holts Tyreweld size for a BMW i3?
Well, the i3 has 19-inch tyres or 20 inches, depending on the model. Going back to the skinny nature of the wheels though, surely you don’t need a 500ml ‘large’ can when the tyre’s width is less than half an ‘average’ car wheel?
I asked Holts directly as there was no clear answer.
It took them a few days to get back to me – which makes me think they did actually check with their technical guys – and they recommended the 400ml can. Which is the ‘Medium Tyre up to 16″’
Holts Tyreweld Instructions
In case you need them in a hurry, here are the Holts Tyreweld instructions for use:
- Find and remove the cause of the puncture if you can
- Shake the can and screw the connector onto the tyre valve
- Tear off the red security tag
- Twist the red button to ‘On’ position
- Leave can to fully empty for at least 2 minutes
- Disconnect the can
- Drive immediately for at least 6 miles at a maximum speed of 50 mph to seal the puncture
