PROJECT 106 GTi – Rust – Part 2

Reading Time: 3 minutes

As we mentioned in our last instalment it was time to get the rust corrected on the Peugeot 106 GTi.

I wanted to get it into storage for winter before the weather really turned, so I promptly got it booked in with the guys over at Beaniesport.

It wasn’t good news to start with…having ripped out all of the play dough type metal in the front wing there wasnt much left to work with. I received a phone call from Chris saying it was beyond repair and ideally needed a new inner wing section welding in…not good but to be honest i was kind of expecting it.

I said to forget about the front and to just crack on with the boot/rear arches.

With regular updates along the way the old metal was cut out, new sections cut and welded in on both sides of the boot before finally getting a coat of underseal.

All in it took around a full days work to have both arches fixed.

The good news though was that Chris had driven it from Carwitter HQ to Beaniesport and said it drove solidly on the way over. The strange knocking on the front right has disappeared, and the rear axle (a known issue on GTi’s) has only a minute amount of play, meaning i can put a refurbished axle on hold for a good few years yet!

Having insured the 106 for 24 hours i picked it up from Beaniesport, brimmed it with unleaded, stuck some Redex in the tank for good measure and got ready to drive it 2 and half hours to its winter home in Lincolnshire the next day….stay tuned for the vlog!
