Following on from our Cataclean Review, we thought we’d focus on how Cataclean actually works as a catalytic converter cleaner and explain the science behind it.

Catalytic converter cleaner, does it work?

A catalytic converter contains precious metals that capture harmful gases and pollutants. They do this by catalyzing (hence the name) a redox reaction. They’re fitted to both modern petrol and diesel engines, think of them as a filter for exhaust gases.

Over time these internals can get deposits of carbon building up on them. This hampers the redox reaction process and means that the catalytic converter (CAT) becomes less efficient, so emissions will increase as it can’t remove the harmful gases as effectively.

 

 

When Cataclean is added to your fuel system it’s burnt along with the fuel. The addition of carboxylic acids, aldehydes and active peroxy compounds in the exhaust vapours flow into the converter to break down and remove the build-up of carbon on the surfaces of the filters.

After this process the catalytic converter cleaner (Cataclean) passes through the rest of the exhaust system along with the normal gases.

Now the catalytic converter has a renewed ability to effectively remove harmful exhaust emissions like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. This can be the difference between an MOT pass and fail here in the UK.

Cataclean also contains acetone which is often used in racing cars to help burn fuel more efficiently. Using it will mean the fuel in your car burns more evenly and completely.
