Can You Prevent Your Car From Being Stolen?

Although cars and their locks are becoming much more sophisticated, with modern alarms and keyless ignition, car theft is still something that does happen. If you are looking for ways to make your car much less attractive to any potential thieves, then there are steps that you need to take.

Simply put, if the vehicle is easy to steal and quick to do so, then it will be more attractive to a car thief. If you are able to slow them down and make the car a less attractive mark, then it can reduce the chances of your vehicle being stolen. Here are some things to think about.

  • As a general rule, car thieves do prefer to work when it is dark, as they think that they are less likely to get caught, as there are fewer people around at those times. So as a result, if you are parking your car at night, be particularly careful about where you park your car at night. If you’re not at home and can’t park in a driveway or usual parking spot, then make sure that it is as well lit as possible.

  • There are many reports of people having a vehicle stolen from a driveway by people being able to activate a car key signal from the home. If you have a car key like this, where you start the car without having to insert a key, then there are things that you can do to prevent this. One of the things to make sure that you do is to keep the car key in a box, such as a metal box when in the home, which can block the signal. You should also do this for any transponder key replacement that you have, to make it harder for your vehicle to be stolen. It is a simple thing but can make a difference.

  • Don’t leave valuables in your car! This is another simple thing, but you may be surprised by just how many people do leave valuable items in their car, especially on view. You are making your vehicle a target if you leave things in there like laptops or mobile phones. Although they may not take the car, the glass can get smashed or the locks can get damaged, leaving a lot of expenses for you to cover, or a complex insurance claim to make.

  • If your vehicle doesn’t already have an anti-theft system, which can often be the case with older cars, then get one installed. Thieves will be reluctant to steal a vehicle if they know that the vehicle itself can be found quickly. It can be a good thing to prevent car theft, as well as helping to reduce your insurance as a lot of insurers will offer discounts when these kinds of systems are installed.

By taking steps to reduce how easy your vehicle is to steal, it can go a long way to preventing your car from being stolen. This is not only a good thing for you, and the hassle of dealing with theft and insurance, but also the peace of mind that you need.
