6 Crucial Car Problems You’ll Regret Ignoring

Statistics indicate that about 7000 cars break down daily in the UK. This can make you wonder if the owners of these vehicles or the drivers were aware of any changes before they drove off.

It also raises questions about whether these people made a habit of ignoring seemingly small car problems, only to be left at their wits’ end on the side of a highway. Below is a discussion on some of these issues you may ignore but have the potential to cause significant problems sooner or later. Hopefully, you will not be left stranded this winter.

Chipped windshields

This is nothing more than an aesthetic issue for many people, but that is a wrong assertion. A chipped windshield inadvertently becomes the weak chain in the link. In other words, it reduces your vehicle’s safety and structural strength.

As small as it may look, a chipped windshield tends to bear the remaining ‘healthy’ glass load. Meanwhile, auto reports indicate that the windshield carries as high as 30% of any vehicle’s robust appearance.

However, only a few people realise that in the event of a crash, a chipped windshield carries the increased risk of a shatter. This is a potential danger to both the driver and passengers in the vehicle. Furthermore, a chipped windshield can spread further under intense environmental temperature. For example, in summer and winter, the risk of further damage cannot be underestimated.

Scratches

What looks like a tiny scratch on the body of your car can turn out to be more if you ignore its presence. As common as car scratches are, especially in the UK, it is not advisable to consider them normal. They are not. Sometimes, you may go for weeks or even months before noticing a little ding on the exterior part of your driver’s door. Reports indicate that the pretty common areas where scratches appear are on the doors, bumpers, car boots and bonnets.

The truth is, an unattended scratch can quicken the rate at which that area fades. Again, depending on the intensity of the scratch, it could quicken rusting processes. A thin area of the car’s metallic body has been exposed to weather elements that contribute to oxidisation. Indeed, it is quite unbelievable that a tiny scratch like that holds so much trouble for your vehicle’s metal frame.

Slow-cranking

Ideally, when you turn on a healthy car’s ignition, it responds appropriately. This is what allows it to move. However, for many reasons, some cars experience what has become known as a slow start.

Therefore, instead of starting immediately when you turn the key, it rather takes a few more tries to get a response. Perhaps, the reason some people allow this to slide stems from the fact that the car will respond after a couple of minutes. Unfortunately, what you’re doing is deteriorating the vehicle’s performance even further.

A slow starting car possibly means a problem with the battery, alternator or starter. It can also be another underlying problem that has nothing to do with the parts mentioned. Before you know it, your car can stop on the side of a busy street when you least expected it. At that point, your immediate solution will be to call for a tow truck to convey your faulty vehicle to the mechanical workshop.

Low fuel light warning

Can you count the number of times you ignored the fuel light warning and continued to drive to a longer distance? Without a doubt, quite several drivers are culprits of this seemingly harmless habit. Indeed, when the fuel light comes on, it is an indication to fill up the tank to avoid running out unexpectedly. However, some people assume that even with the low fuel light, the reserve in the tank can suffice for the distance left to drive.

Now, this is why it is wrong. Apart from the obvious function of keeping your vehicle running, fuel is a lubricant. In other words, it contributes to keeping your car’s fuel pump cool. You risk damaging your car if you drive with an almost empty fuel tank. This is because the fuel pump can suck in a great amount of air and cause it to overheat.

Moreover, the high temperature produced can burn certain essential components of the pump. Ignoring it means potentially making costly repairs to keep your car functional. Certainly, you could have avoided this mess only if you had prior knowledge of how fuel pumps and tanks complement each other.

Tyre alignment problems

It is risky to assume that a car pulling to the left or right can be managed with the steering wheel. Usually, the perception is, as long as the vehicle is moving and the driver can course-correct the anomaly, then there is no problem. Unfortunately, this can be a dangerous practice. Alignment issues take a toll on your car tyres as the latter wears out rapidly than normal.

Admittedly, the vehicle in question may not show signs of pulling more to the left or right in some cases. However, when you notice that all four tires seem to have deteriorated faster than they should have, it is cause for concern. Instead of ignoring your accurate observation, you are better off attending to the issue immediately.

Poor tyre alignment increases fuel consumption and can impede your vehicle’s braking performance.

Malfunctioning windows and automatic door locks

Modern cars possess automatic door locks and a centrally-operated window function. An electrical system backs all these. Therefore, if your car fails to lock properly or you notice a change in the windows’ mechanism, you may be experiencing an electrical problem that needs immediate attention.

With electrical issues, you can ensure that some wiring may have developed major faults. If left unattended, the risk of electrical fires is high.

Today, cars are major investments, and you cannot afford to be ignorant about essential functions that always need to remain at optimal levels. Hopefully, you will become increasingly mindful of the performance of your car.
