Here at Carwitter we kind of love the Suzuki Swift Sport, having reviewed it back in 2012 and again in 2013 when the 5 door model came out…well, now we have reviewed it once again!
For 2014 Suzuki have upgraded the Swift Sport to finally give it Sat Nav and DAB radio. These additions are at a cost of only £200 extra over the outgoing model, bringing the total price for our 5 door model to £14,499. The 3 door model can be had for £13,999.
We loved the look of the 3 door Swift Sport, and the 5 door is no different. Its somewhat upright stance seems to be made a little more prominent as your eye gets drawn to the rear doors, but other than that it still has its sporty, fast looks.
From the front or rear you cannot tell the 5 door apart, even from the side the rear windows are tinted the same as the 3 door, they really are very hard differentiate. Its rear curves are just as perky, and all round it’s a great looking car!
As we have said previously the 5 door loses none of the Swift Sports handling prowess, you can still chuck it at a B road and come out smiling at the other end.
Normally this is what we get up to when reviewing Swift Sports, however this time we thought we would see what it’s like over a longer journey.
So we took it on a road trip up country, 600 miles later we checked the MPG and it was sitting at 43, amazing! 400 of these miles had been cruising at motorway speeds, the rest were stop start everyday driving.
For such a high revving 1.6 litre engine to achieve that is astonishing to us.
The Swift’s boot is rather meagre at 211 litres, but it was adequate enough for two small overnight bags, having the 5 door model made it easy enough to put anything else on the back seat.
Now for that major change…the Sat Nav.
It’s an excellent system from Garmin and the same model used across the entire Suzuki range. Simple to use, clear buttons, and faultless iPod connectivity. Even though it isn’t a bespoke Suzuki unit, it is easily one of the best systems we have used. You can plug in all manner of connections, AUX Cable, USB, SD Card, iPod or Bluetooth streaming; leaving all bases covered, perfect!
Sound as always with Suzuki’s was great, 5 speakers and 2 tweeters provided clear loud audio with nice bass levels.
One thing that some people may not like is that the interior is less aesthetically pleasing with this Sat Nav unit in place.
On the old Swift Sport you had a rather smart gloss black centre console with buttons adorning either side. This has all gone now, and instead there is a large plastic panel with a cut out for the new Sat Nav unit.
It looks a little like an afterthought…and personally I do prefer the way the old dash looked…
Suzuki have once again shown that they can produce an excellent all round car. Over longer journeys the MPG is excellent, the addition of the DAB and Sat Nav has really rounded off the package nicely.
The only thing I now wish they would add is the heated seat option…maybe next time!
