11 Ways To Stay Healthy When You Drive A Lot

Reading Time: 5 minutes

If you do a lot of driving, whether that’s due to work, meetings, a commute, or simply errands, then you need to make sure you’re doing what you can to stay healthy.

Driving regularly can lead to poor posture, weight gain, unhealthy meal choices, and even skin damage from the damaging sun rays penetrating the glass. Below, you’ll find 11 ways to stay healthy when you drive a lot – start making changes now, or you might regret it later on.

  1. Plan Regular Rest Stops

If you’re going on a particularly long drive, then make sure you plan rest stops. Shorter drives are fine, but if you’re going to be driving for a few hours then you should probably plan to get out and stretch your legs, and maybe use the bathroom. It can be annoying; after all, you probably want to get to where you’re going as quickly as possible. However, you’ll feel so much better if you plan regular stops.

  1. Wear SPF

The sun’s damaging rays penetrate through glass and can damage skin just as they would if you were outside sunbathing. It doesn’t need to be a hot or sunny day, either. It could be dark, dull, raining, cloudy, even snowing and the sun can still damage your skin! Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Wearing SPF is one of the quickest ways to slow down premature ageing and stop skin damage in its tracks. Make sure you regularly reapply it and don’t be afraid to wear 30 or 50. Do your face, arms, and any other body part that may be exposed. You’ll be glad you did this in the long run.

  1. Make Sure You’re In A Comfortable Seating Position

How you sit when you drive matters. If you’re slouched over, you’ll round off your back. You could also end up with your neck in a pretty uncomfortable position. There are tools you can use to ensure you’re in the right position. Don’t underestimate how important this is!

  1. Don’t Fall Into Bad Driving Habits

There are all kinds of bad driving habits that could put you and other road users in danger. Try to stay mindful as you drive, rather than go on autopilot. Not only that, make sure you’re using your turn signals properly, and that you’re staying in your lane.

Don’t drive with the radio too loud, either, or you might miss something important. Try to stay on top of your driving technique as much as possible. Remember, you’re never too experienced to practice the basics and stick to them!

  1. Get Your Eyes Tested

Your eyes may be fine, but you should still have them tested for peace of mind. An optician will be able to spot any issues early on, and if you need glasses, it’s far safer to get them now than later. You’ll be surprised at how much they can improve your quality of life. Take a look at this website and you’ll be able to get some at an affordable price, too.

  1. Make Time For Exercise

When you drive a lot you need to make time for exercise. Nobody should be sitting for too long, but those who drive a lot find themselves sitting for hours each day. Make sure you prioritize exercise and plan time to do it every day, even if it’s just half an hour.

Getting your body moving is so important for your physical and mental health and could help you to prevent a lot of issues in the long run. You don’t need to be an athlete, either. You could try yoga or just going for a walk each day to get your steps up and move your body in a way that feels good.

  1. Avoid Getting Distracted

Getting distracted while driving can be very dangerous. You could get distracted by loud music, phone notifications, or by having too many people in the car. Make sure you set clear boundaries for the car and you should be able to stay safe and healthy.

If you have to have multiple people in the car for whatever reason, then make sure they know not to distract you. You may also want to put your phone in the glovebox to ensure you aren’t tempted to check your notifications.

  1. Keep Your Stress Under Control

Road rage can be a huge cause of accidents. The more you lose your head, the less able you are to make rational decisions. It can be tough to keep your emotions under control when somebody cuts you off, doesn’t say thank you, pulls out on you or is rude to you, but taking deep breaths and ensuring you don’t lose your cool will keep you and other road users safe.

  1. Try To Plan Your Meals

When driving a lot you may be tempted to grab fast meals from service stations and similar places. While eating something is better than eating nothing at all, you still need to try to find a balance.

Try to plan your meals a little better. Invest a cooler box if you can and take some food with you. If you can’t do that, then try to get familiar with food labels so you know what has a good balance of protein, carbs, and fats, and what isn’t loaded with saturated/trans fat and sugar.

  1. Get Plenty of Rest

Make sure you get plenty of rest before driving. People have fallen asleep behind the wheel before and it is devastating. Driving tired can be just as bad as driving drunk.

  1. Keep Your Car Clean and Tidy

Keeping your car clean and tidy will ensure you are safe from allergens and dirt that may be lurking. It’s not nice to drive in a cluttered environment either, so get your car cleaned out regularly. Washing it on the outside will ensure it looks better for longer, too.

Staying healthy when you drive a lot isn’t easy, but it’s doable with a little pre-planning.
