As a follow up to carwitters 508 review, we recently had the chance to drive the 508 HYbrid4.

It’s a very impressive car, with 200BHP from a 2.0 Diesel engine coupled with a 37BHP electric motor, this version of the 508 Saloon offers Four wheel drive capability. At £31,450 it is a tad steep but as a company car it makes a lot of sense, with emissions of only 95g/km and a potential of 78mpg you can see why!

The first thing you notice when you get into the 508 is the large Jog wheel, next to the automatic gear lever. The car has four different modes: 4WD – delivers grip to all 4 wheels, Sport – 200BHP always available, Auto – efficiently auto and ZEV – electric only mode.

Once you press the start button on the Hybrid4, lights flash and everything comes to life, but there is no noise what so ever. Press the accelerator and again, no noise, not a peep. The only thing you will notice is being pushed forward from behind, this is because up until about 30MPH and as long as the car sees fit the electric motor will do all the work. So you can set off for that 5am business trip, safe in the knowledge that you haven’t woken anyone!

The great thing about the 508 though, is the car is constantly generating a charge to replenish the electric battery. Take your foot off the pedal, and in some cases you won’t even need to brake, the regenerative braking built into the front wheels will slow you down all on its own! If that’s not, enough when driving under normal conditions the diesel engine trickles power to the battery.

But the great thing happens when you put the car into “Sport” mode, this turns the humble 508 into a 200BHP, 4WD monster! The electric motor kicks out 200NM of torque alone, so once you nail the throttle in sport mode you can feel the full power of both the systems working together. And I can confirm its bloody nippy! A 0-60 of 8.7 seconds is only 0.8 slower than the top spec GT 2.2 HDI engine, the added weight obviously effects this time…..but what you have to remember is this car emits just 95g/km of emissions!

The 508 shows constant drain and charge information, on both the Sat Nav display on the dash, and on the drivers display between the dials. The car also has a regenerative, and eco section to the speedo so you can keep an eye on your green driving.

All in all it’s a very impressive car with very green credentials, however at £31,450 it is rather steep; seeing as the top spec fully loaded 2.2HDI GT model starts at £30,275! You will benefit from having this model on a company car scheme though, as opposed to the thirstier GT.
