The Most Frustrating Places to Drive

17 Apr , 2019

Commuting or travelling in general can take up much of our daily time so it’s important we can get to our destinations easily and without any hiccups along the way. Whilst a stress-free and simple drive would be preferable, we’ve all experienced frustration when travelling – especially on the road.

Car Finance lender Moneybarn wanted to find out the most frustrating places to drive to uncover where you’re most likely to run (or drive) into trouble. To do this, they collected data from 47 locations in England, on 4 different driving annoyances:

  • Speed Cameras
  • Potholes
  • Slow Traffic
  • Delays

The data was normalised, taking into consideration the population of each area. This produced a score between 0 – 10, 10 being the most frustrating and 0 being the least. An overall frustration score was calculated by averaging the results from across all four data points.

No surprises here, London came out on top as the most frustrating place to drive with a total frustration score of 8.63 – London also scored top for both slow traffic and delays!

The research also allows us to look at individual data points such as potholes. Here, East Sussex took the top place, followed by London and Surrey. Lancashire was the worst offender for having the most speed cameras followed by Essex and Manchester.

Outside of London you’re most likely to be delayed or experience slow traffic in Kingston Upon Hull, however, Kingston Upon Hull scored the lowest for potholes so although you might be caught up in some delays, you’re least likely to run into any potholes!

So how frustrating to drive is your local area? Find out by exploring the data.
