Ford have announced its plans sell fully autonomous cars in high-volume by 2021.

Already Ford have tripled the amount of autonomous cars in testing and will aim to have about 30 self-driving cars by the end of this year. They also plan to triple the amount again in 2017.

These autonomous cars are set to be sold without a steering wheel or accelerator and brake pedals. The cars are being designed primarily for commercial mobility services.

Ford are investing in four startups to help their autonomous car development which will help research in advanced algorithms, 3D mapping, LiDAR, and radar and camera sensors.

Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO said:

The next decade will be defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago

We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury vehicles.

This is all a part of Ford Smart Mobility, Ford’s plan to be the leading manufacturer of autonomous cars.
