The 17th and 18th of February saw several BTCC teams head to Thruxton for an “official” test session ahead of the 2016 season.
Among those there were Honda Yuasa Racing complete with their 2016 machine and 2015 champion Gordon Shedden behind the wheel.
Yuasa’s 2015 car was also in attendance with Speedworks Motorsport’s Matt Simpson taking the opportunity to put testing miles on his new car ahead of his maiden BTCC campaign.
Eurotech bought the total number of Civics to 4 with both Martin Depper and Jeff Smith putting laps on their machines while WSR bought one car for Sam Tordoff, Rob Collard and new recruit Jack Goff to drive over the day and a half’s session’s.
Pirtek Racing by way of Motorbase had Andrew Jordan out on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday mornings sessions before an off prematurely halted their progress. The team didn’t want me or anyone else for that matter photographing the damaged front of the Focus, one wonders what Motorbase don’t want anyone else to see!
Team Parker Racing’s Dextra entry was also on track during the two days with Alex Martin looking to build on his first BTCC season in 2015.
Shedden is not expecting an easy ride in defending his second BTCC crown.
On what he expects from the competition:
…I can’t change what they’re going to do, they’ve only got the same box of bits as us, I guess all we can do is do the best that we can. Our competition is going to come from far and wide up and down the pit lane so we’re certainly not resting on our laurels we’re trying to push the boundaries and see what we can come up with for this year.
On defending and winning titles:
…Everyone wants to beat, well the British mentality is to beat the people who are successful you know so, it was difficult last time I’ve just got to wait and see what happens this time around so, i’ll give it everything and give it a rip and so, we’ll see how it goes, and if it’s not, well it wont be from a lack of trying!
The BTCC returns on the 2nd and 3rd of April at Brands Hatch. If you cannot wait until then the official series presentation takes place at Donington Park on the 22nd of March.
