After a 2-month break, Formula E continued its inaugural season at the Putrajaya street circuit in Malaysia.
Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird produced a dominant win after starting 2nd to become the second driver to win a Formula E race.
Bird took an early lead from Oriol Servia in the early stages but found himself behind Daniel Abt after pitting. Due to an early pit stop strategy, Abt had to conserve his power, which allowed Bird to overtake and cruise to victory.
I’m chuffed to get Virgin Racing’s first win however I really want to dedicate this win to Jules Bianchi
The race saw quite a few crashes as Katherine Legge suffered a spin which collected Michela Cerruti. Matthew Brabham spun and clipped Nick Heidfeld, much to his dissatisfaction.
The latter incident saw the safety car deployed.
Bruno Senna who was in the points had a nasty crash on the last lap.
Contact between Trulli and Nelson Piquet Jr allowed di Grassi and Buemi through behind Abt. The pair had impressively battled their way up from 18th and 19th on the grid.
Both drivers passed a struggling Abt to take the last two podium spots.
Nicolas Prost took pole for the second consecutive time but had a 10-place grid penalty from his highly talked about crash with Nick Heidfeld in Beijing. Prost finished fourth behind his teammate.
d’Ambrosio, Chandhok and Servia took fifth, sixth and seventh.
Antonio Felix da Costa finished eight in front of Virgin driver Alguersuari. Daniel Abt was able to finish in tenth.
The next round takes place at Punta del Este, Uruguay on the 13th of December.
