This is the Renaultsport R.S.01 a sub-LMP performance race car that will launch a brand new series for aspiring sportscar drivers.
The 1,100kg monster develops 500 bhp from its 3.8 litre Nismo derived V6 and should top 190 mph when it joins the Renault World Series in 2015.
The low slung racer wouldn’t conform to any GT regulations but Renault say it meets all modern LMP1 safety standards.
From next year 20 of these beasts will compete in the Renaultsport Trophy, a new addition to the Renault World Series which already includes Formula Renault 3.5, a regular stepping stone for future F1 and WEC racers.
That power figure and 442 lb ft of torque all routed through a seven speed ‘box mean the Dallara chassised R.S.01 will sit roughly between DTM and GT3 in terms of performance.
Renault, and no doubt partners Nissan, hope the new series becomes a gateway into the GT, Sportscar and DTM ranks.
Final details of the series haven’t been finalised, but each team will be Pro-Am and will have up to four hours track time per race weekend.
Pro champions will be given the chance to test with Nismo’s top Super GT team while the Am victor will get the possibly more exciting chance to race in the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours.
And looking at the stunning machine I don’t think we need say more.
