Following its launch at Geneva the Golf GTE will go on show this side of the channel for the first time at next weekend’s Gadget Show Live.
Despite sounding like it should be entered into the World Endurance Championship, the GTE is actually the first plug-in hybrid version of VWs ever popular hatch.
Combining electric motors with a 1.4 litre TSI petrol means the GTE pumps out an impressive 201 bhp and 248 lb ft of torque, powering it to 60 in just 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 138 mph.
Despite these impressive figures VW claim the GTE will manage a mind-blowing 188 mpg and just 34g/km of CO2.
Even in full electric mode, which can be switched on using a single button, the GTE can hit 81 mph.
Outside, the look is very much GTi meets e-Golf, the GTE’s full electric cousin, with C-shaped running lights joining the GTi’s horizontal strafes.
As is becoming more and more common charging and other features can be controlled remotely on the GTE using a phone-app.
No more details have been released but the GTE will be on show with it’s sister the experimental ultra-low emission XL1 and all electric e-up! at Birmingham’s NEC.
