Citroën is a brand famous for its comfort, always offering innovation in this field, and the C5 Tourer is no exception.

The most efficient engine is the 1.6-litre e-HDi Airdream diesel, which returns 61.4mpg and emits 117g/km in CO2.

Their reliability has been hampered by electrical and mechanical glitches, however the safety features are top rated. Traction control and ESC are available as standard.

3. Mazda 6 Tourer

In terms of reliability, Mazda is a proven manufacturer.

The most efficient engine for this model is the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, with a consumption of 64.2mpg and CO2 emission of 116g/km.

Mazda have developed a unique ‘i-stop’ system, which saves fuel by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle is static. There is also an innovative energy recovery system called ‘i-Eloop’, which stores energy when the vehicle is not accelerating and also enhances fuel efficiency.

Bluetooth connectivity, air-conditioning and a 5.8-inch touch-screen come as standard. There is plenty of leg room and the ride is very comfortable due to the softer suspension type.

The maximum boot capacity is 1,632 litres with the rear seats folded down. Safety features consist of six air-bags, ESP, ABS, hill hold assist, a radar-based Smart City Braking system and Lane Keep Assist, and most of these come as standard.

A 3-year or 60,000-mile warranty is also offered on this model.

2. Hyundai i40 Tourer

Over the past few years, Hyundai has become known for its reliability and overall consumer satisfaction, which puts the i40 estate model high on this list.

The entry-level diesel engine, including a stop-start system, emits only 113g/km with a fuel consumption of just 65.7mpg.

The boot space is 533 litres with the seats raised and 1,719 litres when folded.

The best choice of engine is the 1.6-litre TDI diesel, with a fuel consumption of 74.3mpg and a tax-free 99g/km emission of CO2.

The car offers plenty of passenger room in the front and back. The boot has a class-leading 610 litres of loadspace with the seats up and 1,740 litres with the rear seats folded.

Soft suspension assures a very comfortable ride, and a cooled glovebox comes as standard, along with electric front windows and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Being a member of the VW family, reliability is high. Safety features include ESC, ABS and a post-collision braking system that applies the brakes automatically once it senses an impact.

A 4×4 model is also available.
