Mercedes have just announced its new C-Class, which looks rather like a blown up CLA along with the droopy face and bum!
It has also grown in size (as most modern cars are doing!) it has an 80mm longer wheelbase, 95mm longer in total and 40mm wider. Boot space is increased to 480 litres.
Halogen headlights are standard, but two full LED variants can be chosen. The rear lights are all LED. The all aluminium body is about 70 KG lighter than a conventional steel construction. Overall weight is down by 100 KG, helping cut fuel consumption by 20%.
The new C220 BlueTEC ECO has a Cd value of 0.24, wind noise has also been reduced. All engines feature start/stop technology and are Euro 6 compliant.
At launch three engines will be available:
A supercharged 1.6 litre diesel is on the way, it will produce 115 or 136 HP and 280 or 320 Nm of torque depending on configuration.
Also a C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID with four-cylinder diesel engine and a compact electric motor will be available, generating an output of 204 + 27 hp this will achieve 72.4 mpg combined.
Two new 6 speed manuals will be available for the 4 cylinder engines, the 7G-Tronic PLUS auto ‘box has been refined further, and is an optional extra.
Fully decoupled front suspension is separate from the spring strut, allowing for more grip and increases steering sensitivity. At the rear you will find a 5-link independent setup. Comfort, lowered comfort and sports (15mm lower) setups will be available.
Air suspension can also be fitted, this will have “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+” modes as well as ‘Individual’ where the driver can choose custom settings. Airmatic also self levels.
Electric parking brakes comes as standard. 4MATIC all wheel drive will be an optional extra, and available in the UK.
More powerful models will arrive at the end of 2014, that will be a V6 with 330 BHP. You will have to wait to wait until Jan 2015 to get your hands on the all out V8 AMG though.
Interior quality is meant to have taken a great leap over the outgoing model. It features that rather odd looking ‘clip on’ 7″ TFT screen found in the A Class and CLA. This can be controlled by a central mouse style touchpad.
You can upgrade to an even larger, glass covered screen if you opt for COMAND Online. Link your phone to the standard audio system and you can surf the net, Google Local Search, StreetView and even Facebook…yay?
UK price and spec is still to be confirmed.
