Land Rover have announced the Worlds first premium diesel SUV hybrid. The technology will feature in the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport.
Each vehicle now has 26% lower emissions (169 g/km) and combined MPG of 44.1. Yet they still manage 335 BHP with an astonishing 700 Nm of torque!
Performance of the SDV6 Hybrid power unit is on par with the SDV8 engine. The hybrid unit is mated with an 8 speed ZF automatic gearbox. In all, the battery pack and 35kW electric motor weigh less than 120 KG.
Each model can travel up to 30 MPH on pure electric for 1 mile if the driver chooses too. Energy is recovered via regenerative braking.
One interesting feature is that the interior remains unimpacted by the hybrid system!
The latest generation Range Rover models have all been designed with the integration of a hybrid system in mind. Consequently, the liquid cooled battery pack is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle in a protective boron-steel cradle without impacting on the cabin or luggage space. The Range Rover Hybrid has the same five-seat capacity and luggage space as the standard vehicle and retains the full-size spare wheel. This no-compromise philosophy is echoed in the Range Rover Sport Hybrid whose interior is unchanged from the standard model, right down to the 5+2 seating.
Order books open September 10th, first deliveries will be in early 2014. UK pricing is still TBC.
